Is Your Parent-Child Relationship Strained?
Parenting can be one of the most rewarding experiences, but it can also be incredibly challenging. Many families experience difficulties in their parent-child relationships, especially when children are struggling with behavioral issues, emotional dysregulation, or developmental concerns. You might feel frustrated by frequent power struggles, constant defiance, or a lack of connection with your child. It's common to feel overwhelmed, unsure of how to respond, or even guilty about the challenges you're facing. Many parents struggle with these issues, and it is okay to seek guidance. It is important to know that it's okay to ask for help, and there are proven strategies to improve your relationship with your child.

Ongoing conflict and negative interactions between parents and children can significantly impact the entire family. It can create a stressful home environment, lead to feelings of resentment and isolation, and affect children's emotional and social development. Children may act out more, have difficulty in school, or struggle to form healthy relationships. Parents may feel exhausted, discouraged, and unsure of how to make things better.
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based treatment designed to help families with young children (typically ages 2-7) who are experiencing behavioral and emotional difficulties. PCIT focuses on improving the quality of the parent-child relationship and teaching parents effective behavior management skills. Through live coaching sessions, parents learn to use positive communication, consistent discipline, and play therapy techniques to create a more positive and nurturing home environment.
At PCS, our certified PCIT therapists are dedicated to helping families build stronger, more positive relationships. We provide a supportive and collaborative environment where you can learn and practice new skills. During PCIT sessions, you'll receive live coaching from your therapist as you interact with your child in a specially equipped playroom. You'll learn to use specific communication and behavior management techniques, such as praising positive behaviors, ignoring negative attention-seeking behaviors, and using effective commands. Through this process, you'll develop greater confidence in your parenting skills and see positive changes in your child's behavior. A skilled therapist will work with you and your child to identify patterns and behaviors that may be contributing to the conflict. By observing and understanding these interactions, you can begin to make necessary changes and build a more positive dynamic. You will work with your therapist to set achievable goals which instills a sense of purpose and direction, you and your child regain motivation and hope as you work toward positive change.

PCIT typically involves weekly sessions divided into two phases: Child-Directed Interaction (CDI) and Parent-Directed Interaction (PDI). During CDI, you'll learn to follow your child's lead in play, using positive attention and praise to strengthen your bond. In PDI, you'll learn to give clear, direct commands and use consistent consequences to manage challenging behaviors. Throughout the process, your therapist will provide live coaching and feedback to help you master these skills. You'll also have opportunities to practice these skills at home between sessions.
